There’s no debating this alumni couple’s passion for K-State

By Marisa Larson

The K-State debate team brought two people from very different backgrounds together. Now, after decades of marriage and successful careers, Paul and Janice Firling of Angier, N.C., are giving back to the university that has given them so much joy.

Janice and Paul both attended K-State for their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Both of Paul’s degrees are in political science. Janice’s bachelor’s degree is in education and her master’s degree is in speech language pathology. Janice and Paul met through their participation on the K-State debate team. “Debate team and athletic events were highlights of our college years, but our fondest memory is of being married in Danforth Chapel,” Janice said.

The Firlings have created a bequest through their will to fund the Paul R. and Janice D. Firling Graduate Award for a graduate student in the Departments of Political Science or Communication Studies in the College of Arts & Sciences.

“Thanks to our parents, our professors at K-State, and our own perseverance and work ethic, we were able to succeed in our respective careers and receive recognition for our accomplishments through the years,” Paul said. “While that means a great deal, the best feelings have come from knowing that we have been able to raise our family with strong values and have reached so many people through the work we have done. We want to leave a legacy that will benefit K-State students who have similar goals.”
