A gift of perspective

Endowed scholarship allows students to see the world

Kate Gutierrez has wanted to be an architect since middle school, when she impressed a teacher with her design-build project in class.

“She didn’t even know what an architect was,” recalled her mother, Kelly Gutierrez. “I told her what they did and she said she was going to look into it — and she did!”

Fast-forward a decade and Kate Gutierrez graduated in May 2015 from Kansas State University’s Department of Architecture. The Fullerton, California, native chose K-State for three reasons: affordability, scholarship availability and its leading reputation among architects.

Gutierrez earned financial aid such as the Cleve Humbert Study Abroad Scholarship, which allowed her to spend a semester studying culture and architecture in Italy. Because it is endowed, the scholarship will continue to fund such experiences for generations of K-State students.

“It was quite amazing to actually go see the historical architecture I’d studied since my first semester at K-State,” she said. “The scholarship truly helped make it happen.”
