‘Burrow’ project earns recognition at national competition

K-State interior design students snagged second place in the 2024 Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) student competition with their inventive “Burrow” wellness space.

Tasked with creating a space to support college student mental health, the team had 21 days to design a “mind-scape” — a 50-square-meter wellness space.

The K-State team, comprising seniors Sarah Adams, Abby Busby, Sydney Martinson and Jadyn Wolf, designed a nature-inspired space that offers a break from daily pressures. Their creation, “Burrow,” is a haven where students can decompress, whether in solitude or a community setting.

“This competition aimed to craft a rehabilitative space for a college campus,” Adams said. “As students, we’ve seen the toll stress takes on mental health. Our research led us to nature’s calming influence, inspiring ‘The Burrow,’ a serene retreat for students.”

To launch the project, the team consulted Kathleen Hatch, Morrison Family associate vice president for student well-being.

“This project is a prime example of aligning university priorities with student learning experiences,” said Migette Kaup, program director for interior design. “K-State brings a lot of wellness initiatives to the table. Learning through them helped refine the designs.”

K-State’s interior design program, the only four-year CIDA-accredited program in Kansas, emphasizes innovative and practical design solutions. This commitment is mirrored in the university’s adoption of the Okanagan Charter, underscoring a pledge to student well-being.

IDEC, an international leader in interior design education, features the winning projects on its website. This recognition celebrates the K-State team’s creativity and dedication, paving the way for their success in various commercial design fields.
