Trey Fisher, senior in finance, from St. John, Kansas, has received the very generous Marie O. Ronen Scholarship from Kansas State University. Trey is the son of Vance and Sara Fisher. He is a member of the Student Finance Association.
This annual award of approximately $5,000 was established by Jim and Cibyl Ronen, also of St. John, in memory of Jim’s mother, a former teacher who expected all As from her students, especially her son.
Jim graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in 1960 with a degree in business. Jim actively worked in the First National Bank and Trust of St. John for 44 years and was President of the bank before retiring in 1994. Cibyl (Teichman) Ronen graduated from K-State in 1960 from what was then the College of Human Ecology (now Health and Human Sciences). Jim and Cibyl have two grown children, Brent and Shelby (Bauer). Daughter Shelby also graduated from K-State in 1991 with a degree in social work. Both mother and daughter were active in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Meanwhile, son Brent graduated from Fort Hays State University with a communications degree in 1987.
Jim and Cibyl served on the Johnson Cancer Research & Education Advisory Council at Kansas State for many years. They have also invested in cancer research and other scholarships at K-State.
Eligible students of the Marie O. Ronen Scholarship must be graduates of USD 350 and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The recipient may receive the scholarship for up to five years.
