Reflecting the society we serve

K-State’s model for bringing more underserved students to the (drafting) table wins accolades

The best way to ensure tomorrow’s designs meet the needs of a large and varied population is to educate a large and varied group of designers and architects today.

In the modern landscape of architecture programs nationwide, the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University has earned a place of distinction. Citing the college’s Society We Serve initiative in particular, Insight Into Diversity magazine has named APDesign a recipient of its 2024 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award.

APD’s winning design

Through the Society We Serve, APDesign utilizes philanthropic funding to offer a summer orientation course to first-year students along with opportunities to take advantage of mentors and peer supporters.

The initiative continues to assist throughout the academic journey, awarding more than $240,000 to low-income students who encountered financial struggles as they work toward a diploma — assistance that’s achieved a remarkable retention rate of 93% as a result!

Continuing to think ahead, the college has also expanded its robust K-12 outreach program to interest youth in related professions. APDesign increased its community partnerships and expanded summer camp opportunities, such as the Summer Design Experience that lets teens preview K-State’s architecture, industrial design, interior architecture, landscape architecture, or regional and community planning programs while they sample campus housing, dining and recreational services.
