Women in Business Summit empowers network of future leaders
The business world is known for being male dominated, but the clock is ticking.
Women in the business world are making strides toward equal representation, growing women-owned businesses in the U.S. by 114% within the past two decades. K-State’s Center for Principled Business is doing its part to build that momentum through its Women in Business Initiative and student organization, which is working to bring fellowship and leadership opportunities to high school and college women.
One of the partnership’s main offerings is the annual Women in Business Summit, which flooded the K-State Student Union with nearly 600 current and prospective students during its 2024 event.
Anna Nordberg, Women in Business president and senior in accounting, says the summit brings together aspiring businesswomen in all stages of their academic journeys.
“One of the main goals is to engage high school women interested in business. We tried to bring in a variety of programming so each girl could relate to a piece of the day,” she explained. “Walking into a room full of mostly men — especially in the business world — can be very intimidating, so knowing there are women there to support you is incredibly helpful at any age.”
The summit featured keynote speakers Sheila Ellis-Glasper, founder and CEO of SEG Media, and Charlene Lake, chief sustainability officer and senior vice president at AT&T.
Throughout breakout sessions covering areas such as financial literacy, personal brand-building and personal well-being, the event also awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships.
“Being able to help women fight the fear of being a minority in the business world has been huge,” Nordberg continued. “The College of Business is so eager to help us grow. I think the summit showed every woman involved that asking questions and being confident isn’t intimidating, but empowering.”
