Equine excellence

K-State student receives surprise scholarship for her dedication to equine medicine.

What started as a typical Saturday game day at K-State quickly turned into one of the most memorable moments of Reaghan Jokovick’s veterinary school career. Amid the excitement of alumni tailgating and general Wildcat spirit, Jokovick was unexpectedly presented with the Excellence in Equine Services Award.

“I was honestly shocked,” said Jokovick. “Receiving this scholarship was the most amazing feeling and truly one of the best days ever in my veterinary school career.”

The Excellence in Equine Services Award is an annual scholarship to be awarded to a student who has performed at the highest level academically, has a dedicated interest in equine science and has chosen to pursue an equine career. Jokovick fit the bill exactly.

Jokovick has an extensive background in equine care and medicine. She is an equine veterinary practice certificate student, has Kentucky equine externship experience and was part of the Equine Field Service at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. She completed the advanced equine rotation and applied for an internship.

Her deep connection to horses extends back to her childhood.

“I have been interested in equine medicine since I was in high school,” said Jokovick. “I grew up riding horses, and in high school, I worked and rode at a local barn and loved being around them. I was so mesmerized by the veterinarians working on them and quickly realized I wanted to do that one day.”

Jokovick is passionate about her future, and the award was a welcome boost to her goals. She plans to intern at an equine practice to gain more clinical skills, followed by an internal medicine residency.

“This scholarship has helped my confidence grow more and made me realize I am entering the right career path,” she said. “I was so happy to be surrounded by a few of my friends and the faculty I look up to the most!”
