Greater good

Quick reads about K-State’s good work and latest accolades

Seeing stars

How can you take your singing up a notch? Study under one of the greatest opera singers of all time.

Thanks to a new master class series, K-Staters learn from world-class stars of opera, jazz, and choral and classical music.

Superstar soprano Renée Fleming, legendary jazz saxophonist Bobby Watson, Grammy-winning choral group Chanticleer and cello virtuoso Amit Peled coached K-State’s top student performers this fall.

Just how notable are these top teachers? Fleming, for example, hasn’t just played the world’s greatest opera houses. She’s performed everywhere from the Olympics to Buckingham Palace to Sesame Street.

Jerry A. Hall, associate vice president at Eli Lilly & Company and a 1986 graduate with degrees in music, biochemistry and molecular biophysics, created the series and named it after his mom, QuVee Mock.

What’s next? The Boston Brass, the Gesualdo Six singers and costume/scenic designer Yvonne L. Miranda are on tap this spring.

Heating up

K-State’s enrollment numbers jumped this fall. Here are the highlights:

  • +9.7% in first-time freshmen
  • +3.7% in undergraduates
  • +2.8% in total enrollment

Joining forces

K-State renewed its firstin-the-nation partnership with the U.S. Army to enhance military education and strengthen community ties.

A landmark collaboration 16 years ago officially bonded K-State with the 1st Infantry Division and U.S. Army Garrison–Fort Riley. K-State became the first institution to secure an Intergovernmental Support Agreement for Intellectual Talent Sharing with the Army.

In what’s considered a model for other colleges, K-State delivers wellness programs, professional development, transition assistance and other services for military-connected learners. K-State, long recognized on the Military Friendly Schools list, has taught military tactics for more than 150 years.

Twice as nice

It’s a place that’s loved — and loves — full well. And now it’s official: K-State students are the friendliest in the country for a second consecutive year.

The Princeton Review also says Wildcat student life is top-tier in other areas:

Eyes in the sky

K-State’s drone research enhances event safety

Big events or concerts are filled with excitement — until something unexpected goes wrong.

Working to elevate public safety, K-State Salina’s Applied Aviation Research Center is using drones to give first responders a bird’s-eye view.

K-State partnered with the Kansas Highway Patrol to bring bots to events around Kansas, including the Kansas State Fair. Using aerial videography, a live stream was broadcast to a command station run by law enforcement and AARC, who could direct officers to incident response sites quickly.

K-State experts also aided in safety response at the Kelce Jam music festival. By practicing at planned events, officials also learn how to communicate when a natural disaster strikes.

K-State is making events, both planned and unplanned, safer — one flight at a time.
