Stepping up at a moment’s notice

Members of the Geology Advisory Council created a scholarship with a matching donation from Mary Vanier to honor Dr. Sambhudas Chaudhuri.

Dr. Sambhudas Chaudhuri, or Sam to his students, is believed to have taught more than 15,000 students in his 51 years of teaching, mentoring and performing award-winning research in geochemistry at Kansas State University.

When the Geology Advisory Council learned of the K-State Family Scholarship Program, Dr. Chaudhuri’s dedication was the inspiration for them to create the award in his name.

“Dr. Chaudhuri is one of the great professors that have left an amazing legacy in the department,” Geology Advisory Council member, Troy Johnson said. “We’d like to thank him for his half-century of service to the university and contributions to geoscience.”

With the K-State Family Scholarship Program, new gifts of $30,000 are matched with $30,000 from the seed fund provided by Mary Vanier, for a total of $60,000. $10,000 goes into an expendable fund, making a $2,000 scholarship available to be awarded to students immediately. The remaining $50,000 goes into the endowment, ensuring future generations of Wildcats will receive scholarships as well.

The Dr. Sam Chaudhuri- Mary Vanier Family Scholarship award was created by 14 Geology Advisory Council members; Troy and Amy Johnson, John and Jennifer Miesse, Derek and Ashley Ohl, Raymond Eastwood, Paul and Bonita Gerlach, Tom and Patricia Hansen, Doug and Beth Helmke, and Richard Robinson.

“This was a gracious matching opportunity from Ms. Vanier that the council and our alumni couldn’t pass up,” Johnson said. “We’re thankful for everyone that stepped up at a moment’s notice to create this scholarship that will immediately impact students studying geosciences.”
