K-State students learn the intricacies of international sports media during the Dublin K-State game.

How would you explain the complexities and fundamentals of American football to an audience who has little to no experience listening to or watching it?

That’s the difficult task a group of K-State international sports media students faced on Aug. 23, 2025, when K-State football played Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland.

This event marked the first international broadcast and 75th anniversary for Wildcat 91.9, the longest-operating student-run college FM station in the country.

Four seniors in the group covered the broadcast: Jon Grove and Jimmy Coffman did color commentary, Adrian Holguin did the play-by-play and Sophie Smith did sideline reporting.

What else did they do?

Aside from airing the Dublin game, students in the KSU in Ireland: Sports and Leadership program went on tours, excursions to Galway and Belfast, and visits to museums and local sites related to the study abroad curriculum.

Students explored the rich communication culture of Dublin with hands-on courses, immersive sideline reporting and collaborative storytelling.

“It’s a crash course in international media, live under the lights,” said Grove. “There’s no better way to expand your lens than broadcasting 4,000 miles from home.”
