Kansas State University announces naming of Kruse Family Plaza

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University on Feb. 19 announced the official naming of the Kruse Family Plaza, an outdoor gathering space adjacent to the Western Star Global Grain and Food Center.

The naming honors the philanthropic investment of Ronald O. “Ron” Kruse and Doug and Sabrina Kruse in support of the center — formerly known as the Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation — which will open in fall 2026 as the university’s next‑generation interdisciplinary environment for effective problem solving.

The Kruse Family Plaza will serve as a welcoming, community‑oriented front door to the facility, which adds advanced research labs, collaboration spaces and integrated student learning environments as part of K‑State’s Agriculture Innovation Initiative.

“The Kruse Family Plaza reflects the spirit of partnership and progress that drives Kansas State University,” said K-State President Richard Linton. “The Kruse family’s legacy in the global grain and feed industries, combined with their commitment to our students and faculty, will strengthen our land‑grant mission and help shape the future of agricultural innovation.”

Both Ron and Doug Kruse are graduates of K-State’s Department of Grain and Food Science, the world’s only collegiate academic department dedicated exclusively to milling, baking, animal feed and pet food. Ron earned a bachelor’s degree in feed science and management in 1962 and Doug in 1988.

The Kruse family’s industry legacy spans nearly a century. In 1935, Otto H. Kruse purchased F.F. Booker Wholesale Hay and Grain and founded O.H. Kruse Grain & Milling, establishing a philosophy that would shape multiple generations of milling enterprises: “Know the customer and strive for their success.”

O.H. Kruse Grain & Milling was acquired by Western Milling in 2001, integrating the Kruse family’s heritage into one of the western United States’ largest agriculture and nutrition companies.

“Kansas State University has shaped our family for generations, both personally and professionally,” Ron said. “The Kruse Family Plaza represents our enduring belief in the power of education, innovation and community. We are honored to support a space that will welcome students, industry partners and visitors for decades to come.”

The university’s O.H. Kruse Feed Technology Innovation Center, dedicated in 2013, remains one of the premier feed education, research and outreach facilities in the nation. But the Kruse family’s philanthropic impact at K‑State extends beyond facilities. The R.O. Kruse Professorship in Agriculture, currently held by University Distinguished Professor P.V. “Vara” Prasad, accelerates leadership in agronomy and global sustainable intensification research.

Additionally, Doug and Sabrina established the Kruse K‑State Family Scholarship, supporting students and helping the College of Agriculture build a stronger recruitment pipeline.

“The Kruse family’s investment supports the spaces where collaboration happens — where students connect with mentors, where ideas turn into solutions, and where our community comes together,” said Dan Moser, Eldon Gideon Dean of the College of Agriculture. “The Kruse Family Plaza will be a catalyst for the kind of engagement that defines the future of agriculture at K‑State.”

As Kansas State University’s strategic partner for philanthropy, the KSU Foundation inspires and guides philanthropy toward university priorities to boldly advance K-State.
