Wildcat football players returned to their roots, giving their former elementary schools a field day surprise.
Imagine the joy you would feel if one day, while you were in grade school, your already exciting end-of-year field day got even better with a surprise visit from your favorite K-State football players.
That’s how students at Maize Central Elementary School felt when Avery Johnson, Will Anciaux and Wesly Fair walked in the door handing out high-fives and cheerful smiles.
“The visit was an amazing opportunity for K-State football players to return to the Wichita-area schools that supported them in their earlier careers,” said Lori O’Toole Buselt, executive director of communications for Maize USD 266. “For Avery Johnson, visiting Maize Central was a return to the community he grew up in.”
The idea for the visit came from Maize High School graduate, Maddi Gage, who is now K-State’s director of player engagement. Maize was thrilled to welcome the players and kick off an exciting visit.
The game plan
“The players fully jumped in alongside the students, participating in inflatables, sack races, tug-of-war and other games,” Buselt said. “The visit created a fun atmosphere filled with laughter, encouragement and memorable moments for students and educators alike.”

The children were extremely excited to interact with the players, cheering as they participated in games and activities. The players were very friendly, creating a positive shared experience throughout the building
The players also travelled to Isely Elementary School (Wesley Fair’s old school) and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School (Will Anciaux’s former school), as well as Wesley Children’s Hospital to brighten patients’ days.
The football players worked hard to spread joy and connection among students, educators and community members.
“It was a memorable day for Maize Central Elementary School and a great celebration for students as they wrapped up the school year,” Buselt said. “We are very thankful to the players and to K-State Athletics for making the event possible.”
