How K-State is leading the charge for a healthier future
In a discreet corner of Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, a dedicated Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) team works tirelessly against hidden adversaries.
As the state’s largest and only public veterinary diagnostics lab, the KSVDL is the clearinghouse that veterinarians around the state and country rely on to diagnose and track diseases that could wreak havoc on individual households and the U.S. agricultural economy at large.
“Ever wondered how diseases are detected in our furry friends? Eager to uncover the mysteries of animal health? At KSVDL, we support a diverse range of animal health needs, with a wealth of expertise in various animal fields,” said Jamie Retallick, the director of KSVDL. “Our team includes individuals with backgrounds in zoology and wildlife, poultry and swine, among others. These resources enable us to provide assistance across a wide spectrum of animal issues, often working diligently behind the scenes.”
From unraveling the mysteries of feline cancer to combating canine viruses, the dedicated experts at the KSVDL conduct over 500 types of diagnostic tests related to veterinary medicine and animal health.
Their mission is clear: ensure the health and safety of animals, from beloved pets to exotic creatures.
“Their diverse caseload offers invaluable insights into a broad spectrum of animal health issues, leveraging the collective expertise of the diagnostic lab’s team,” said Megan Potter, veterinary clinician.
But with increasing demand and expanding responsibilities, the KSVDL faces its own growth spurt. As the laboratory has doubled its caseload in recent years, it’s stepping up to meet the needs of veterinarians and safeguard animal health across the board.
