Kansas State University’s Cats’ Cupboard food pantry is one of 2,800 organizations across the United States and Canada to receive a $1,000 grant from The Starbucks Foundation’s Neighborhood Grants program.
A collaborative initiative supported by students, faculty, staff, business partners and other members of the K-State community, Cats’ Cupboard promotes food security among K-State students and staff through an on-campus food pantry and educational engagement opportunities. The organization was among 33,000 community-led nonprofits throughout North America to be nominated by Starbucks partners (employees) in recognition of its role in fighting hunger, empowering youth, uplifting families, addressing homelessness or promoting environmental stewardship.
Now in its fifth year, the Neighborhood Grants program helps build sustained local impact and inspires Starbucks employees to engage with nonprofit organizations in their areas year round. Since 2019, the foundation has awarded more than 13,000 grants totaling an excess of $20 million.
“The missions of The Starbucks Foundation and Cats’ Cupboard are both focused on transforming lives by promoting health and well-being in our communities,” said Shelly Williams, Morrison Family Director of Cats’ Cupboard. “With the help of our community and our network of partners, Cats’ Cupboard makes a meaningful impact on the lives of K-Staters in need. Thank you, Starbucks, for this generous contribution!”
A 2022 American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment revealed that nearly 40% of K-State students surveyed were food insecure, meaning they lack access to enough food to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Williams said the grant will be used to sustain pantry operations and keep food available for K-Staters in need.
