Elisabeth Wentz-Harrington and Doug Harrington use matching funds to create scholarship for College of Engineering.
With her long list of family connections to Kansas State University, Elisabeth Wentz-Harrington and her husband, Doug Harrington, jumped at the opportunity to participate in the K-State Family Scholarship Program and created a scholarship for the College of Engineering.
“My grandfather went to K-State, I had uncles that went there, my dad went there, all of his sisters went there and my siblings all went there,” Elisabeth said. “It was kind of the only school I could consider going to, and it was a wonderful choice.”
With the K-State Family Scholarship Program, new gifts of $30,000 are matched with $30,000 from the seed fund provided by Carl and Mary Ice, for a total of $60,000. $10,000 goes into an expendable fund, making a $2,000 scholarship available to be awarded to students immediately. The remaining $50,000 goes into the endowment, ensuring future generations of Wildcats will receive scholarships as well.
“I really appreciate the Ice family making this available,” Elisabeth said. “We’ve only been able to give a little bit here and a little bit there, so this makes our gift feel like it’s going to matter a lot more.”
Elisabeth said her time at K-State was unlike any other experience she’s had, and she hopes to bring that opportunity to current and future students.
“We support to give back. We’re very blessed,” Elisabeth said. “We support several different scholarships because for one thing it’s in memory of people we cared about, and we hope it inspires somebody else to give back down the line.”
