Translating tech for the masses

K-State Salina introduces technical writing program for professionals

Part of K-State’s mission to extend education beyond the boundaries of campus, continuing education and immersive training through K-State Salina helps professionals excel in high-demand fields. The latest is an online certificate in technical writing.

For the aerospace, technology, defense, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and other industries, technical writers translate complex data and ideas into clear information tailored to broad audiences. Think instruction manuals for consumers, engineering schematics for technicians and product specification guides for manufacturing companies.

K-State Salina’s technical writing professional education credential was developed by experts and vetted by industry partners to give learners an advantage in the field.

Training to tame techspeak

The program’s six four-week classes deliver these specialized skills:

  • Communication proficiency
  • Translation of technical information to accessible documentation
  • Data gathering and analysis
  • Documentation creation and design
  • Editing and proofreading
  • Specialized technical writing language familiarity

After selecting one of two introductory writing classes, the order and pace of the other modules are flexible.

“Technical writers are an integral part of a product’s success,” said Lisa Shappee, professor and director for the Center of Academic and Learning Innovation at K-State Salina. “These courses will help learners master essential writing techniques and build a pathway to an in-demand career.”

Who’s technically a good fit?

The technical writing program is open to everyone — no previous experience or knowledge required — but for mechanically inclined professionals or communicators looking to add a little technical expertise, this credential could be a career-boosting no-brainer!
