The ripple effect of giving

Phil and Mardi Crandall use matching funds to create scholarship for human ecology students

Inspired by her years in the classroom and their shared love for Kansas State, Phil and Mardi Crandall participated in the K-State Family Scholarship Program and created a scholarship for the College of Human Ecology.

“This was a way we could immediately make a difference for someone,” Mardi said.

With the K-State Family Scholarship Program, new gifts of $30,000 are matched with $30,000 from the seed fund provided by Carl and Mary Ice, for a total of $60,000. $10,000 goes into an expendable fund, making a $2,000 scholarship available to be awarded to students immediately. The remaining $50,000 goes into the endowment, ensuring future generations of Wildcats will receive scholarships as well.

Mardi said K-State captured her heart and allowed her to find her passion for writing. Later on, she was able to merge her interests in writing with early childhood education.

“What better way to expand your influence than to teach others?” Mardi said.

Phil and Mardi said they hope their scholarship will help the next generation of students pursue their interests and make a difference in the world.

“It’s a matter of the ripple effect of one gift and hoping that the ripples will magnify over the years,” Mardi said.
